How to create nice mock-ups for your designs
mockups are .PSD files that have been designed to lend realistic renderings to your design. It is useful for determining how a design might appear after printing, or to present to a client so as to have a sense of the “real appearance” of the design, before printing commences.
It’s easy to get mockups and stock imagery confused, so it’s important to note that using a mockup and using stock imagery in your design itself are two very different things. Mockups are not the final product that you’re selling to a client – they’re only a visual tool used to display your work, and most of their licenses do not allow you to transfer the mock-up file itself to a client.
In this article we’ll be providing you with mockup resources that are licensed for commercial use, so you can submit your designs utilizing them as a backdrop.
.
To use a mockup,
first step:
.
.
– search for and download appropriate mockup (there are countless free and paid mockups on the web, ranging from flyers to shirts, etc.)
.
.
– unzip file if necessary
Second step:
open .PSD file with
Photoshop and locate the editable (smart) layers. (the layers whose contents you’ll be replacing with your design. The layers are mostly labeled accordingly for easy access)
.
.
– Double-click on the smart layer thumbnail to open the layer on a new photoshop window.
Third step:
Import your design into the window and replace the original one with yours.
Save the current changes to the layer, then go back to the original photoshop file. You will see that your design has replaced the original design in the mockup.
You can customize the original mockup by adding or removing design elements from it to make it more personalized before you export your final design as jpg, png or any other web-supported format.
